Dear Folks:

Welcome to STARBUCKS, the place where we will just hang to talk about stuff that doesn’t have anything to do with training or journalism or internships. It’s just a coffee-break place, where you can order a Mochachino and yack about your pet, your sports team, your boyfriend (not too many details, please!), or anything you feel like yacking about.

This is your Place To Visit, not to bend your brain.

Please visit. Place your order. Let’s chat.  cheese

Heh, I have some life stuff to vent about. My internship starts in a couple of weeks and the strange thing is that it is the farthest thing from my mind at this point, which is maddening. I’m absolutely ready to go and focus on this internship, but there are three classes standing in the way, graduation festivities, and moving to deal with. Right now, I’d love to be exploring the city I’m going to intern at and try and get started on some stories early (my internship spot is only 40 minutes away), that’s really not possible at this point. I’m in the midst of writing a 20-page senior seminar paper and have another 10-page paper for another class plus a final to finish up all in a span of a week. It’s going to be a some long days ahead is what it boils down to…

On a lighter note though, I meet up with Paul Gutierrez, a chipster who was at summer orientation, and watched the open workout for boxing star Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. For those of you who don’t quite know who he is, Pacman is one of the premier stars in the sport and a cultural icon in the Philippines. He isn’t as popular here in America, but in the Philippines he is the US version of Muhammed Ali or Tiger Wood, the country named him a National Treasure quite recently and he very nearly won a congressional seat in his country. It’s no different amongst Filipino’s in America. Whenever my relatives get together, the only thing they talk about over food is Pacman and his next fight.

To finish off this story, I was in the media section of the workout (thanks to Paul) and got to meet the regular Bay Area sports columnists at the SF Chronicle and the Mercury News. Then I ended up at a high-end restaurant called Skates in Berkeley with these reporters and got to sit at the table and interview Manny himself and have a conversation with his promoter who is a legend in the sport. It was a thrilling experience and its all the more agonizing I can’t start my internship sooner.

Here are the stories from the columnists that were there:

Hey, fellow Slug—sometimes life gets in the way of our journalism ... anyone else having trouble getting started?

Aside to Rachelle—welcome back from the depths....

Hey I just got back from two-day orientation at UF (Geaux etc) with my son. Fun. Whole world awaiting him he has no idea of....

VANESSA SAID:

I have been in Green Bay, Wisconsin for five whopping days now. I began my internship on Monday and have been extremely busy with work since then. However, I have found myself finding the area to be quite lonely.

Though everyone at the newsroom is super nice, I haven’t established any friendships or met anyone to go grab a bite to eat or coffee. Needless to say I have been bored out of my mind!

I live in student apartments on University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus which would make you think that I would have met people by now, but there is almost nobody around. I do live with two other girls who spend most of their time at bars and talking about boys and Hawaii, which makes me feel like I am back in high school (well...minus the bars).

I have tried to keep myself busy by exploring Green Bay but there is only so much to explore here other than dairy farms, Target and Walmart.

Don’t get me wrong, this place is beautiful, but I LIVE IN THE COUNTRY! *sigh*

Hey guys—don’t worry about posting in the wrong place… this will become easier as you get more familiar… to post, just click on the thread you want (STARBCUCKS, for example...) go to the last post, and hit reply. If you want to quote from someone, highlight the quote you want, hit quote, and the WHOLE QUOTE WILL APPEAR.... DELETE THE PART YOU DON"T WANT TO QUOTE… leaving the bit you DO want to quote. TIP: Be sure that the QUOTE mark (the word quote) is at both front and back of bit you want to quote.

And how many times can YOU use “quote” in one sentence?????

I guess that if there’s anything for me to yak about, it’s personal safety in my new town.

In short: Downtown Poughkeepsie—where my newspaper is—is super-sketchy and poorly lit. For comparison, I felt safer in NYC this weekend than I do in Poughkeepsie—and that’s in the daytime, people. Reading stories at work about robberies and assaults—many involving guns—only makes me even more nervous.

This is hard for me because—in case you didn’t notice during orientation—I can get a little puff-chested when I walk around (can girls be puff-chested? is it bad that I’m calling myself puff-chested? (yes)), and I thought I knew what “dangerous” streets were. Amsterdam, Madrid, Bilbao, NYC, Philly—I thought their streets were kinda scary to walk alone at night. But who would have guessed Poughkeepsie’s streets would upset me most?

Hope everyone—men and women—stays safe this summer. I never thought I would wish my peers something so corny-sounding and parental like that because, as a teenager from rural Nebraska, I tended to scoff at women who carried tiny blades and pepper spray in their purses.

Maybe I’m growing up (a little) and finally learning that, yeah, women should be aware of where they walk at night.

Two of my stories made the front page today and I am EXCITED to say the least. The centerpiece I worked on with another staff member but the other story is all me!

Hey guys! I am finally am able to post and participate after this flooding mess is starting to die down in Iowa. Actually, parts of Southeastern Iowa may still flood, as the water from all the rain has not reached their yet. In Des Moines, where I am, one part of the city was flooded, but no where near I work or live. Cleaning up is starting in certain parts of Iowa.

Let me tell you, this flood/storm stuff is good for my portfolio as I have written weather stories and breaking news as far as evacuations and natural disasters. Nothing with too big of a byline though. There are about 100 reporters working at the Register and 8 other interns, so any bylines we come by in stand alone stories are great. I did get a couple of flood bylines, but most of my reporting was driving around the Des Moines Region, interviewing people about their experiences, and calling the Register to dictate it in so someone there could update our website.

I’m really proud to work at the Register, and even though the floods were a disaster, it sure made Des Moines and Iowa a good place for news.

Hi all!

Since I haven’t been able to post until now and since I didn’t meet all of the summer people yet (I went to the Spring orientation), I thought I would do a little introduction on here so you guys will know a little more about me.

I’m Carley. I just got into Spokane, Washington last night. I am going to be writing for the Spokesman Review until the last week of August. I graduated from the University of Southern California in May. (Go TROJANS!!!) I was a print journalism major. I’m originally from Missouri and eventually I want to move back to the Midwest. ( I am one of those rare people that do. Most people, once they get out, never go back.) I really miss all of my friends in LA and I really miss the vibe, culture, and weather of LA, but I’m hoping Spokane will grow on me.

I’m sure I will have many stories to share once I start my internship. (which should be tomorrow. yay!)

Honestly, I can’t count on my hands the number of women cop reporters I have run across… maybe it’s different down on the West Coast… There was Edna Buchanan, the great cop reporter for the Miami Herald (who, back in the day, was THE only woman cop reporter for a major metro) .... but most of the ones I run across (including the ones I work with at the S-S) are guys… anyone think differently?
