Hey Sergio, BANG is not alone.

Yahoo, Morgan Stanley, Tribune Co., GMAC Financial Services/General Motors, Cisco, Sega Sammy, Cell Therapeutics Inc., Northstar, Talyst, Amgen, ZymoGenetics, Nastech, HouseValues, CoCo, Neah Power, Trumba, Digeo, Clearwire, Imperium, InfoSpace, Tesla’s…

I’m sure the list is longer, but you get the idea.

Oh and this last one is just grand.  Many fear that Gov. Schwarzenegger’s plan to cut billions from the education fund will provide tons of unrequested permanent “vacations” to who knows how many teachers.

And yet, certain people don’t want to admit we are going through a recession.

It’s crazy! Especially when it happens in your own backyard.

Can this be the end for print journalism? Probably not.

Mary Ann: You had said that potential employers also look at headlines that a person writes. How do I keep track of my headlines? Do I write them down, cut the headlines from the newspaper? How do I do it?

This is a good question!

I would save the tear sheets. All of them.
Literally, when you write a good hed, clip the page (the whole page) from the day and keep it to copy for your portfolio.

A potential editor wants to see the whole hit—the hed, how the stoy was played, how the hed reflected the story, any element of design or sub-hed or pullquote, etc.

Your tear sheet is your clip!

(when you do your portfolio, you probably want to shoot down to the story vs shoot the whole page, but this is your evidence.)

Also, if there are any major contributions you have made to a story in your editing, keep notes on that as well so you can write up a little blurb to include as an explainer with the clip!

p.s. I have seen copy-editing portfolios where you literally have three or four heds listed on a page, ALONG WITH THE STORY TOP, p (lede, first grafs, whatever) to show not only the good hed but the relationship between the hed & the content.....) hope this helps…

Big win for the Lakers over the Suns on Wednesday, cheers Sergio. I wish the Arizona Republic’s Sharon Yep and Astrid Galvan were here to tell me how the newsroom took it.

Someone in my newsroom showed this site to us today and I want to share it with you:

This is amusing, to be sure! My humble two cents: It also provides a frame for one of the biggest pitfalls in the news business—spending time complaining and being p---ed at the newspaper (classic newsroom swamp stuff). Read it for laughs, but don’t get sucked into the swamp!

Sharon’s probably thinking that a Pau Gasol is another body part. LOL!

Wow, I got on 1-A. It was a side column, but the story I wrote about a hometown team winning the state finals got on the front page. Never would have happened had I not volunteered to go to Lakeland, ha ha. I hate four hour road trips by yourself.

How bout the Mavericks finally trading for Kidd? w00t! (Sarcasm people).

That Kidd trade might actually put them over the hump but who knows. Is it just me or does Shaq slow down the run-and-gun offense that is the Phoenix Suns when he’s on the court?

Sergio,

Still can’t believe Sharon said that...it still cracks me up when I think of her reasoning. And I don’t know what the Suns were thinking with the Shaq/Marion deal. However, it definitely helps them in the playoffs against the other bigs in the West.
